Opportunity knocks for youth as unemployment expected to stay at record lows: Don Pittis
Prime Minster Justin Trudeau held a Town Hall with Hundreds of YES Youth at the O4AY – “Opportunities for All Youth” event on June 27, 2018. O4AY is a coalition of Canadian employers including Starbucks Canada, Walmart, Tridel, The Source, Teleperformance and HMS Host who are working together to address the high youth unemployment rate and have set a target of hiring 40,000 youth who have barriers to employment. This wonderful initiative will work with organizations like YES and the City of Toronto’s PAYE program to fulfill its mandate and help change even more lives through employment.

YES President, Tim Lang and YES Manager, DiAnne Brooks were featured on CBC Radio interviews across Canada. Each city has its own broadcast team and Tim and DiAnne were interviewed 15 times each for cities nationwide. The interview was based on summer job prospects and how some youth are turning toward internet based businesses. YES commented on its experience and expertise to helping youth succeed.

Treasury Board President and the Minister for Digital Media, Eleanor McMahon, announced the “Employing Young Talent Incentive” by the Ontario Government at an event in Hamilton. This new incentive will help small business hire more youth and with the help of YES and other organizations, help change lives. YES President & CEO Timothy Lang was the MC for the event, while it was hosted by Niko Apparel’s President, Joe Camillo. Camillo has helped many young people over the years and his business, Niko Apparel, is a great local success story, marketing sporting clothes worldwide, including outfitting parts of the Olympic Team for Canada and many other nations. Minister McMahon was joined by Camillio and Lang and MPP Ted McMeekin, has had a career of public service and helping bring people out of poverty. The new incentive will help YES with business to hire more youth.

YES was thrilled to welcome team members from Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic for the launch of the third year of Gap Inc.’s This Way Ahead (TWA) program. Delivered in Toronto through a partnership with YES, the TWA program provides at-risk youth from the GTHA with vital pre-employment and life skills workshops and the opportunity to receive paid work experience at a Gap Inc. branded store. This valuable experience helps youth gain crucial skills as they enter the workforce for the first time. We are proud to work with Gap Inc. and the Gap Foundation on this vital program!

March 6, 2018 – CityNews interviewed YES President & CEO, Timothy Lang, regarding the new Ontario legislation on Pay Transparency. Lang discussed the importance of initiatives which could help close gaps in pay based on gender, ethnicity, or any other factor. Lang stated that YES works with thousands of businesses to hire youth based on ones skill, qualification, work ethic, attitude and potential and YES has had success helping to eliminate pay discrimination. Lang welcomed the change to provide even more transparency to large organizations, while ensuring small businesses have flexibility.
