The Fashionista’s Den Competition Launch!

Inspired by the hit CBC television show, The Dragon’s Den which gives new entrepreneurs the opportunity to pitch their business to a panel of Canadian business moguls, the Fashionista’s Den will give twenty lucky Passion for Fashion participants the opportunity to pitch their fashion-based business idea to the Fashionista’s Den judges - your Passion for Fashion Instructors!

One lucky winner will receive $1000, a free one-year membership to the Toronto Fashion Incubator (TFI), and 50 hours of business and fashion mentorship - a prize package valued at $10,000!

YES and TFI will select the Passion for Fashion participant with the greatest potential for launching their career as an entrepreneur in the fashion industry. Regardless of your background or previous experience, YES and TFI are challenging you to find a way to prove to us that you are an eager entrepreneur ready to launch and operate your own business in the fashion industry.

The competition is open to Passion for Fashion participants between the ages of 16 and 29 who have completed four out of the six of Passion for Fashion workshops by December 1st 2009.

The competition opens January 4th 2010 and closes February 5th 2010. We will only accept submissions for the competition during this time.

Submission Requirements

1)     Fashionista’s Den Competition Application Form (download Fashionista’s Den Application Form).

2)     Cover letter outlining why you should be chosen as the winner of the Fashionista’s Den Competition.

3)      Short Bio (1 - 2 paragraphs).

4)      Resume

5)      A Business Plan: Using the template provided to you in Business Workshop 3, build a 12 - 13 page business plan that describes your business, your product or service and ultimately details how you business will operate. (download the Business Plan Templates.)

6)      A Fashion Presentation Board: The Fashion Presentation Board is to be used as a persuasive visual tool that represents your company and brand. It can contain illustrations of your product, mock ads for your company, fabric swatches, patterns, inspirational images etc. You can use as many mediums as you want to create it! Participants are encouraged to be as creative as possible! However, the most effective presentation boards will clearly communicate your company’s image and products while strengthening its overall branding.

Pick up your FREE Presentation Board materials at YES: Participants who qualify for the Fashionista’s Den Competition receive a free presentation board, layout paper (tracing paper) and sketching pencil from YES. This can be picked up at YES starting today. Please come between the hours of 9am to 5pm during the week. When you arrive, please advise the front desk receptionist that you are here to pick up your Passion for Fashion Presentation Board materials. Please be sure to call or email in advance to tell us when you will be picking up the materials.

Submitting Your Entry…

All submission requirements can be emailed or mailed except for the Fashion Presentation Board which must be labelled with your name and you company name and brought to YES. Participants are allowed to pick-up their Fashion Presentation Board once the competition is over.

A Passion for Fashion - Workshop Schedule and Registration

Business Workshop #1: Operations

Instructor: Richard Healey

Description:

This section will deal with preparing a basic business plan. Elements of the plan including market research, target market identification, branding and positioning will be covered. In addition Cash Flow forecasting, basic accounting concepts will be discussed. Regulatory requirements when operating a business – PST/GST rules will be discussed. Finally, we will discuss basic principles when dealing with Banks and operating business accounts and applying for credit.

About Richard Healey

Richard has over 25 years experience as a business leader, corporate executive, and entrepreneur, with a diverse background in Management, Sales, Finance, Marketing, and Business Development.  Richard’s industry experience includes, Financial Services, Retailing & Franchising, Professional Services, Software Development and Consulting.  Richard has been coaching the business planning and sales processes throughout his career and brings a wealth of first-hand experience to both seasoned professionals and new entrepreneurs.

Fashion Workshop #3: Creating a Persuasive Visual Presentation

Instructor: Danielle Meder

Description

This last fashion workshop will teach participants how to pitch their fashion line or business. An interactive demonstration will show how to draw fashion illustrations and technical illustrations.  Discussion will follow as participants are guided through developing a presentation with visuals will be discussed. Through this course, participants will start to develop their presentation for the Fashionista’s Den Competition.

About Danielle Meder

Danielle Meder is a fashion illustrator located in Toronto, Canada.  Educated with a degree in Fashion Design, she has found her niche helping fashion designers communicate their ideas.  She has also attended fashion weeks in Toronto and New York and created editorial illustrations for Canadian newspapers including the Globe and Mail, National Post and NOW Magazine.
